About Karen
My Story
I have more than 35 years’ experience in healthcare- with a particular emphasis in the area of Central Sterile Processing (CSP).
As a young woman, starting in the healthcare field, there were limited opportunities in leadership offered to people of color. Although I had numerous years of experience in my field, great work ethic and exemplary attendance, I quickly learned that in order to get ahead I would have to further my education -understanding that knowledge was one thing that no one could take from me.
After years of repeated rejections for promotions – through perseverance, I became the first African American supervisor, and later manager, at the facility where I started my CSP career.
Although I come from a large family of six siblings, I chose not to have children; however, over the years I have served as a mother and a mentor to many.
I am a woman of faith. On most Sundays, you will find me in my local church worshiping- singing loudly while clapping my hands to a good ole gospel song!
The first half of my life, I found comfort in hard work, organization and structure. These attributes, methods and factors afforded me a pathway to achieve many personal and professional accomplishments.
Today no longer a slave to the employee time clock, I’m living life fully and proudly playing hard- unapologetically and on my terms.
I’m taking every opportunity to experience the world; you might find me lying on the beach of Jamaica, Aruba or Hawaii, or enjoying a safari hunt in Africa. I might be on a camel ride in Dubai, cruising the Caribbean Islands, or walking the streets, bear-spotting in Alaska.
I look for opportunities every day to inspire or tell my story to help someone else on their journey. Standing on the scripture, Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” I believe that all things are possible.
I am the proud owner of numerous companies, and a published author of two books“From Chicken Poop to Soup”, and CSPD Management, “What Should I Do”.
My life quote, “Life can be as amazing as you would like it to be! Simply strive for it, and it will happen!”
I believe your life is what you make it. We all have a story, and although some of our stories are funnier, happier or sadder than others, it’s your story. We can choose to be a victim or a victor. I choose the latter.

From Chicken Poop To Soup

"What Should IDo?"
Would You Have Surgery Where You Work?” I’ve asked this question numerous times in various facilities across the country. Each time only about 3% of the staff will raise their hands. The other 97% of the hands remain lowered. This is more telling (and more frightening) than the best surveyor’s report! We are so much better than 3%. No one comes to a hospital to try and get worse. They come to get better. CSPD gets to help and be a part of that. This book is to help CSPD leaders with tools, tips, and a few stories to help along the way!

Not many can say that they saw Covid-19 coming or how it would turn the world upside down. The 2020 Pandemic has impact families, business and countries like we have never seen. Knowing this, the question becomes; what have we learn; how have we been impacted and how do we as leaders position ourselves for the next major wave of change to mitigate the impact?
